These are some of the mistakes from one of the messages spread over the WhatsApp group trying to explain the concepts of HTTP, HTTPS, Emails and other links.
Mistakes:
1. HTTP is a search engine
2. All the links with HTTP have viruses and malicious intentions on the user
3. 3. Main objective of HTTP links is hacking user’s information
4. 4. All
emails addresses must include @gmail and all with words separated by a dot
before ‘@’ symbol are also false emails addresses.
5. 6. All
the link addresses with the words separated by the dot before that of the main
domain are unsafe emails.
General corrections:
Both HTTP and HTTPS are the protocols used to view pages. HTTP
is insecure as it allows the data filled in the HTML form to be sent on the
server via a public internet as plain text i.e., no encryption. However,
if the site visited does not need a user to fill in information like username,
passwords, or bank account number (login systems or site for online shopping),
no problem.
HTTPS is the HTTP that makes use of another
protocol (SSL or TLS) to secure the information by encrypting them as
they pass via the internet. This encrypted information is meaningless to the
hacker.
Links like https://civeipt.udom.ac.tz and https://coict.udsm.ac.tz/
are the correct links and safe. It’s not true that all links of this kind are
for attacking the users. These are just subdomains for udom.ac.tz and udsm.ac.tz respectively.
Apart from google mail (Gmail), there are other emails
like yahoo mail with ‘@yahoo.com’ at the end, and others one can make
from the hosting sites like chat@almasimzugu.com.
